As I progress through college and enter my final week of school, I like to reflect on the change among my life and the future I am creating for myself. I understand and fully believe that paths to our future are not made, but found. As I progress I realize that my daily activities have changed both myself and where I am going, not only with my education, but my life in general as well.

Message of the week, think of the world you carry inside of you and remember the paths you take on your life journey are not found, but instead created by you. If you are facing a challenge right now, this week needs to be about digging deep into your well of strength and then using it to move things forward. You might be ready for big leaps, or you might need to start with baby steps; whatever the size, just be sure you move!

We are all visitors—even when we are home. That is, our time in any relationship or place is ultimately limited. We are passing through: Nobody stays forever. How might we act if we thought of ourselves as guests in the lives of friends and family? We might also think of ourselves as uninvited, but not unwelcome, guests of the planet. And I think the rules for being good guests of the planet are just the same: Ask little, accept what is offered, and give thanks.

What lessons will we learn this week? I took my own advice from last week and welcomed the California experience in to my life with open arms, but it was not all play, I had to work with a team I had never met before, and the experience was like no other, it was awesome.

There were times I took a few deep breaths and reminded myself that I am a student in life, in work, in school, in each relationship I have - in every aspect of my life. The idea allowed me to approach the tasks, project, and people differently.

Why not try it and see? What have you got to learn?

The act of compassion begins with full attention, just as rapport does. You have to really see the person. If you see the person, then naturally, empathy arises. If you tune into the other person, you feel with them. If empathy arises, and if that person is in dire need, then empathic concern can come. You want to help them, and then that begins a compassionate act. So I'd say that compassion begins with attention.

While on an exciting adventure, spring break, or trip to New Mexico, whatever you wish to call it, I was reminded of how much I truly care about my daily routine and my independence, but most of all, I was reminded how much I greatly appreciate the strong relationships I share with few people.

My parents of course were at the top of my appreciative list, for they are always the first people to offer me compassion when I make mistakes, even if I do not intend to seek it. I always have their full attention and I make a great effort to offer the same rapport in return, and I believe, aside from all the memories and love we share, this is why our relationship is so strong.

The relationship I share with my parents is a relationship I evaluate and base other relationships on. It is based on trust, honesty, and other strong moral and ethical values that I appreciate to a great extent.

With the appreciation and realization of the fact that I greatly value the strong relationships I share with few people came a time for reconciliation. It became evident to me that many of the relationships I value so much cannot be compared to that of my parents and I’s. I believe that few relationships will ever reach that level, but they still deserve a greater deal of compassion and attention. I plan to begin a compassionate act by assisting in building stronger relationships with friends and family.

My message of the week is to simplify your situation. Look around and show yourself and others the attention of compassion. If you see the person, then naturally, empathy arises. If you tune into the other person, you feel with them

Remember, the act of compassion begins with full attention, just as rapport does.

Like courage or optimism, hope is something that is most useful when it is the hardest to assemble - at our darkest moments. It’s easy for us to be hopeful when things are going well. We are often awash in hope then, but we don't really need it. This could possibly be why real hope isn't easy. Hope can be scary, it can be fleeting, it can be challenging; which also makes hope so valuable.

My message of the week, have hope!

In some cases, hope is a skill that can improve with practice. One tip: practice taking the long view. In a time when we find ourselves filling out monthly statements, the FASFA, or taking our last midterms of the school year, it is easy to get caught up in measuring success by the day, or the week, or the semester. Our problems may be serious, they may not improve this year, but if we take the long view, however, we can more easily find hope that change will come.

Day after day I like to remind myself that this is my life, my journey, and my choice.

I, and probably others, view myself as an independent and private person. I never share too much or get too close to anyone. The thought of commitment almost scares me, but the fact of the matter is, I know exactly what I want in my life, where I want to go on my journey, and that’s my choice.

I like the idea of living for myself and doing whatever makes me happy. This concept, with many core values and morals, was embedded in my mind as a child. The idea of caring about what others think or say is much too exhausting for me.

I never know exactly where my journey will take me, no one ever does; that would just be a long boring road. I have recently reevaluated relationships and decisions, I believe it’s something I must do to reassure myself that the decisions I am making are truly the best for me. I have a strong sense of self and know what I need to feel secure. It's important that I make sure that I can always summon the motivation that I need to pursue my goals with ambition and determination.

Weeding out my friendship garden, planting some new seeds, and strengthening the roots of existing relationships has helped me become a better person. I have made major decisions based on what will make me happy. I'm intrigued and excited and nervous about some looming choices that will impact my life and could alter my journey, but I know each new day is the best day of my life because it is the one on which I decide my life is my own. No need for apologies or excuses. No need for anyone to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift of life is mine; it is an amazing journey; and I alone am responsible for the quality of it.

Your life has been a long journey to this point, is it time you have the best day of your life?

My darling girl, when are you going to understand that normalcy is not necessarily a virtue, it rather denotes a lack of courage.
-From The Movie "Practical Magic"

In a recent article I read, I was given permission for a week to be my abnormal self. I was encouraged to find the courage to be goofy or strange or silly or bizarre. The article said I might freak some people out, but others would welcome the opportunity to remove their own "normal" masks and join me in being “real”.

At first I thought I was not taking advantage of the permission, but what happened is I realized I had not been acting myself to begin with. I had caught myself exhausted from masquerading around as someone I was not. I had become a part of the norm – moody, opinionated, and most of all, irritable. I found myself throwing away relationships I had worked so hard to build, losing sight of my dreams, aspirations, and goals. I was unhappy and the article actually provoked me to be proactive and allowed me to understand and remember that normalcy is not necessarily a virtue, it rather denotes a lack of courage. I had lost my courage, my will to fight, and as a result I was throwing the people and dreams I hold so dearly out the window and frustratingly trying to act a role I was not fit for.

I was intrigued by the idea that I could freak people out, and I think I did that, but the person I freaked out the most was myself. I am a goofy, strange, silly, and bizarre guy, and I intend to stay that way. With the courage I have built up, I plan to jump in the ring for another round of being the real me, and if I ever become a fake, that I nor others can stand, I hope I get knocked the fuck out!

I encourage you to find the courage to be goofy or strange or silly or bizarre. Freak some people out or take control of the advantage, like I did myself, and realize who the real you is.

CONSIDER

Would you walk with me for a few moments?

Sometimes one can just wake up and realize things are not going the way he (or she) wants. Maybe this one has forgotten their dream, the way to personal success, or their support system has turned to work against them.

I am not sure of anyone, but I have plans. I am not asking for everything, but sure I could use a hand. I get a little anxious sometimes, but who doesn’t? I get a little nervous sometimes, what if it’s my cue and I forget my lines? I have yet to master anything. Sometimes I think I must be out of touch, but instead of giving up, I dream.

I would never slaughter the dreams that seem to keep one going, for I could be going too. We all hold on to our secrets and feel shy sometimes, but if we do not believe in our dreams, or even surround ourselves in the company of dreamers, how will we achieve that which is impossible?

I agree with Evan Esar - Success is the good fortune that comes from aspiration, desperation, perspiration and inspiration. I encourage you to inspire the dream believers and non-believers; for as they say, a person we know the least, often strikes us the greatest.

Thanks for walking with me, my mind needed the exercise.
